PDI Party Leader Warns Against Ignoring Genocide Ideology

The leader of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI), Musa Fazil Harerimana, has warned that ignoring genocide ideology remains a serious threat to Rwanda and the region.

Speaking at the party’s General Assembly on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Harerimana said the ideology that led to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi still exists today, both inside and outside the country.

He pointed out that in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), some people continue to spread hate and division, which shows that the fight against genocide ideology is not yet over.

Harerimana also criticized some Western countries, including Belgium, for not supporting the 31st commemoration of the genocide. He said this sends the wrong message and can be seen as denying the facts of what happened in 1994.

“We must speak out and continue to educate our people,” Harerimana said. “Silence helps those who want to twist history and spread dangerous ideas.”

The PDI leader called on Rwandans to remain united and continue working together to fight genocide ideology in all its forms.
